An ancient city

castiglione di paludi

It is a journey back in time that the archaeology of Castiglione di Paludi allows those who visit the plateau and walk its paths to take.

Explore the Castiglione di Paludi Archaeological Park, where lush and varied Mediterranean vegetation welcomes you.

Among the oaks, charcoal burners’ brooms, lentisk trees, olive trees, wild pear trees and licorice trees, lie the remains of an ancient settlement, with its majestic city walls, considered among the most outstanding examples of fortification and military architecture of the classical world.

The main access to the archaeological park is through the East Gate, flanked by two circular towers, which overlooks the valley of the Coserie River.

This ancient place of power controlled the territory with a broad perspective on the direct connection between sea and mountain, revealing the strategic importance for ancient communities.

The walls define an urban space, with a monumental public area containing the remains of a theater, rectangular structures and a terracing wall.A neighborhood of dwellings reveals the private architecture and daily life of ancient communities.

The fortified settlement, dating from the Hellenistic period (4th-3rd cent. BCE), testifies to the conflicts between Magna Graecia cities and Italic populations in ancient Calabria.

Castiglione, inhabited even before the Greeks arrived to found Sybaris, has tombs dating back to the ancient Oenotrian people (9th-8th cent. B.C.) east of the monumental gate.

The Castiglione archaeological site tells the story of the peoples of ancient Sibaritide, highlighting the complexity of relationships and historical dynamics.

The walls and urban forms speak the Greek language, while the material culture reflects the presence of the Brettii, an Italic population of Hellenistic Calabria, exemplifying the mixture of peoples and cultures still relevant today.

Discover and immerse yourself in this eloquent testimony of historical connections and interactions.
